To use substitution to solve systems of linear equations.

Steps to solve linear systems by substitution.
  1. Look for a variable with a coefficient of 1 or −1.
  2. Solve for the variable in step 1.
  3. In the other equation, substitute what you found in step 2 for the variable you chose in step 1.
  4. Solve the equation.
  5. Substitute the answer you found into one of the original equations and solve for the remaining variable.
  6. Check your answers in both equations.
  7. Write your answer as an ordered pair. (Use alphabetical order.)
